The use of popular acrylic wall paints as the base coat to apply self adhesive digital prints onto walls has created some issues. The main problem has been loss of adhesion of the print after a few days. Self Adhesive Prep Coat has been especially formulated to enhance the adhesion of self adhesive digital prints onto internal and external surfaces.

Description

Surface Preparation:

  • It is important to prepare a smooth substrate before applying Self Adhesive Prep Coat. Use good quality fillers and sand smooth.
  • If the first coat requires filling properties use Vipond’s SAP Undercoat. Note: SAP top coat does not have any filling properties.
  • Ensure the surface is dry and clean of dirt, grease and dust.
    Plasterboard
  • Fill holes and joins, sand smooth and dust off. (Do not sand the raw paper faced board)
  • Spot undercoat the filled areas with SAP Undercoat (allow 2 hours to dry) then apply a coat of SAP Undercoat over the entire area.
  • Lightly sand smooth with 240 or finer sand paper.
    Previously painted
  • Scrape off all loose and flaking paint, sand glossy areas and fill cracks and imperfections, sand smooth and dust off.
  • Spot undercoat the filled areas with SAP Undercoat.
  • On surfaces that have been previously painted and are in good order it is important to sand the surface with 240 or finer sand paper. If there is texture to the surface continue sanding to a smooth surface. It
    may be necessary to apply a coat of SAP undercoat and sand smooth.

 

Application:

 

  • Thoroughly stir the paint with a broad flat stirrer.
  • Apply with a brush, roller or spray.
  • It is important to obtain a smooth finish with minimal roller texture.
  • For best results use a 5mm nap mohair or synthetic roller.
  • Avoid bubble formation.
  • Lay off in one direction with a dry roller (same roller with minimum paint loading) to eliminate any bubbles.
  • A minimum of two thin coats is required.
  • Obtaining a smooth surface finish is critical to achieve the best adhesion results with self adhesive digital prints.

 

Drying:

  • Under normal drying conditions (between 15°C and 25°C and below 50% humidity) the paint will be touch dry in 30 minutes and can be recoated after 2 hours.
  • Do not apply if the temperature is below 10°C or above 30°C.
  • If the humidity is above 50% allow longer drying times.
  • Allow the paint to cure for at least 24 hours and wipe over with a clean damp cloth followed by a dry cloth before applying self adhesive prints or vinyl.
  • It is also very important that the prints are completely dry according to the manufacturers recommendations before installation.

 

Cleaning and Thinning:

  • If thinning is required use clean water only.
  • Clean equipment with water.
  • Methylated spirits will soften Self Adhesive Prep Coat to assist clean up.

 

Coverage:

  • Approximately 16 square metres per litre per coat

 

Sheen Levels:

  • Viponds Self adhesive Prep coat is available in semi gloss, satin and low sheen in clear and coloured finishes.
  • Semi Gloss and Satin finish are recommended for removable and permanent vinyl films.
  • A low sheen finish is only suitable for permanent vinyl films.

 

Testing:

  • It is recommended that the customer tests the product thoroughly for their own particular application.
  • Self adhesive vinyls have different qualities and should be carefully selected depending on the application.
